// Import Panasonic HC-W850M AVCHD to Final Cut Pro X//

Panasonic Australia announced a new Full HD camcorder, flagship HC-W850M. The new camcorder is designed with a range of exciting new features such as twin recording technology, Full HD Slow Motion Video and Baby Monitor functionality, offering consumers plenty of fun and creative ways to shoot video. The HC-W850M offers 1920 x 1080 Full HD video recording. I guess the camera just like HC-W850K which record footage in either AVCHD 2.0 or iFrame / MP4 format. For easily editng, this article mainly about how to import Panasonic HC-W850M AVCHD to FCP X. Below solutions all have pros and cons, which features can satisfy your need?

1. FCP X does it for you automatically on import with control over the kind of ProRes format. However, sometimes FCPX cannot import AVCHD footage or import just the sound comes through, not the picture.

2. Compressor will batch convert just about anything to anything, and you can make custom presets to suit your requirements. On the plus side it is very slick, gives lots of control, and integrates well with FCPX, but if it is running in the background on the same machine as FCPX it can be very slow.

3. JES Deinterlacer can batch convert and does deinterlacing effectively. But once I’ve tried to run an inverse telecine on a particular media file, and the exported result has an audio slip. I lined it up in Final Cut to compare it to the original file, the audio isn’t actually the issue, the video is what is getting progressively shorter as the clip progresses.

4. Aunsoft iMedia Converter for Mac. This is the fastest conversion tool I’ve tried which can do batch conversion. The distributed processing is a huge time-saver. I can easily convert HC-W850M AVCHD to ProRes 422 or ProRes 4444 Super high quality de-interlacing. When I run this program, the FCP X won’t be affected. And I can customize profile and do some initial editing.  It’s been working great so far and I’m still studying more than AVCHD to FCP X conversion. I’m not convinced iMedia Converter does the best job. But it is the best for me.

Below is a simple tutorial to convert Panasonic HC-W850M AVCHD to ProRes for FCP X.

// Import Alexa Arri camera file to After Effects-Convert XML MXF to MOV//

How can I import Alexa Arri camera files to After Effects CS6? The camera files including mxf, sun ans xml. I tried to convert XML MXF into QuickTime MOV and I also tried H.264 MP4 - basically any file which I can use in After Effects. When the conversion ended there was a .mov file, but it was only 4kb and when I click to open it opens Quicktime, comes up with the button panel (play, stop etc) but no screen to play the footage. Are these conversion software downloads usually more reliable than this?

XML just sidecar metadata files generated by the camera vendor with MXF footage, they don’t import as assets by themselves. So our task is mainly to convert MXF to Effects CS6 supported formats. TransMXF is the most reliable conversion software I used by far. One highligt that appreciate is the frame rate is high up to 48000 Hz while uncompressed QT render is only 8000 Hz CC in CC. For some reason, AE has been generating all sorts of MXF video dropouts lately, especially when audio render is set to ‘auto’.

Here I would like to share my successful experience on importing Arri camera MXF to After Effects.

Step1. Import MXF files

You can just load MXF video folder from Alexa Arri camera. The XML won’t make difference on MXF video and audio.

Step2. Choose output format.

Click the “Format” option in the main interface to choose QuickTime Movie Format > DVCPRO-NTSC (*.mov) as output format.

Step3. Set advanced profile

Here you can set audio sample rate up to 48000 HZ. You can also customize bitrate, frame rate, audio channels, etc.

Step4: Conversion.

// How to import XML MXF into Premiere Pro CC without error//

I have been given some footages on an EXT HD in XML/MXF format and when I try to import XML MXF into Premiere Pro CC, I got a little problem. There are 37 XML files, and 37 MXF files, so it seems they correlate perfectly. Should I just disregard those XMLs? Should I be using these MXFs instead?

The screenshoots are below.

When importing XML to Premiere, it says “The Importer reporter a generic error.”

When import Video folder (another screen shot below), there are dozens of MXF files.  These import but when I check the samples I found some files with audio ahend of video.

Later, I learn that these XMLs aren’t to be imported.  XML just sidecar metadata files generated by the camera vendor with MXF footage, they don’t import as assets by themselves. So the big problem now is how to solve audio playback out of sync issue. Some guys suggest me to convert XML MXF to Premiere native AVC MOV. I donwload serveral conversion tools. Among them, TransMXF Pro for Mac is best to keep converted MXF video and audio in sync. Conversion is intuitive. The pite is the watermark with the trail version.

After some time, when I need to convert XML MXF to Final Cut Pro with all 4 audio tracks preserved. I realize the Pro is what I need. It is better than any others to keep audio tracks and keep audio/video synchronization.

Below is 4 steps to convert XML MXF to Premiere.

Step1: Load MXF material

Just load MXF video folder to this XML MXF to Adobe Premiere Converter.

Step2: select output format

Click “Format” drop-down list to locate all the profile; choose the “Adobe Premiere/Sony Vegas -> MOV (AVC) (*.mov) “. This option offers video profile optimized for NLE editing. You can also choose WMV and MPE-2.

Step3: Set audio and video profile

You can click “Settings” to set up video size, frame rate, bitrates and other settings.
